The fate of Merton Lands, located north of the QEW between Third Line and Bronte Road, will be decided at an Ontario Municipal Board hearing scheduled for October 2015. Both Infrastructure Ontario and Bronte Green Corporation had applied to the Town of Oakville to develop the land, with the Province withdrawing it’s proposal last fall. Bronte Green Corporation however is still interested in developing a 55-hectare plot of land at 1401 Bronte Road.
The Town is currently conducting a study of the lands to determine land use designations. Council approved the Town-led study in 2012 and it’s set to be completed before the October meeting. Residents hope that the land will be re-zoned as part of our Natural Heritage System and also link them into the Greenbelt, which would prevent any development of the area.
There was a meeting February 3 when the Ontario Municipal Board held a pre-hearing conference at Town Hall to discuss the application from Bronte Green Corporation. It was at this meeting where the October 2015 hearing was scheduled.
Bronte Green Corporation’s application to build about 780 houses and two multi-storey buildings on what is currently Saw-Whet golf course was predictably met with public outcry. Oakville has already met its growth obligations until 2031 that were set by the Province.
